Camera and photo capture is the feature people ask for first and understand least. It reads the media the phone already stores β€” it does not turn on a camera remotely. This guide explains exactly what is captured, when the camera can and cannot be triggered, what EXIF data reveals, and why intimate imagery deserves a higher standard of consent than any other category on this site.

What the dashboard reads from the camera roll

Photos and videos saved to shared storage are readable, together with the metadata the camera writes: capture time, device model, resolution, and β€” unless the user disabled it β€” GPS coordinates. Screenshots are included, and on most phones they are distinguishable from camera captures by their dimensions and storage path.

Uploads are incremental: new media since the last sync is transferred, not the entire gallery. Deleted media is only visible if it was captured before deletion, because the file is removed from storage.

    • Photos and videos taken with the device camera, with timestamps
    • Screenshots, with capture time and dimensions
    • Media received through messaging apps and saved to the gallery
    • EXIF metadata including GPS coordinates where location tagging is on
    • Front and rear camera distinction where the file records it

Remote camera: what is and is not possible

The dashboard can request a photo from the device camera on supported Android builds, and the capture is delivered to your account. This is not a live video feed, does not run silently in the background indefinitely, and shows a system indicator on Android 12 and newer β€” the green privacy dot that cannot be suppressed by any app.

On Android 14 and 15 the camera indicator and the permission audit make covert continuous capture effectively impossible, which is the correct outcome. If a product promises silent round-the-clock camera access on a modern Android phone, it is either not doing what it claims or not saying how.

Metadata is often more revealing than the image

A single photo can carry the exact coordinates, the time to the second, and the device it came from. That is why photo capture is the fastest way to establish where a phone has been, and also why it is the most abusable feature in any monitoring product. Strip nothing, and you have a location history in pictures.

For a parent, the useful check is not the content of every photo but the metadata of unexpected ones β€” a picture taken at a location the child said they were not at. For anyone else, there is no version of this that is appropriate without consent.

    A higher standard of consent

Photos and videos are where monitoring causes the most harm. Intimate imagery, medical photos and private moments end up in a gallery, and capturing them is not a side effect β€” it is a foreseeable result. That is why this feature should be limited to a child's device with their knowledge, or a company device with a written policy that explicitly names media capture.

Installing this on a partner's phone is unlawful in most jurisdictions and, in many, a specific offence. There is no configuration of this feature that makes that acceptable.

    Frequently asked questions

Can the camera be turned on remotely?

On supported Android builds the dashboard can request a single photo. It is not a live feed, and Android 12 and newer display a system camera indicator that no app can hide.

    Are deleted photos recoverable?

Only those captured before deletion. Media removed from the device before a sync cannot be recovered.

Does it capture location from photos?

Yes, where the camera saved GPS coordinates in the file's EXIF data and location tagging was enabled.

    Can I see screenshots?

Yes. Screenshots are captured alongside camera media and are usually distinguishable by their dimensions and file path.
