Customer Rating
LINE dominates messaging in Japan, Taiwan and Thailand, and it behaves differently from Western messengers: a single account spans phone, desktop and tablet, stickers and timelines carry as much social meaning as text, and letter-sealing encryption applies to one-to-one chats. This guide covers what is visible on the device, how multi-device use affects the record, and where the honest limits fall.
What LINE stores locally
LINE keeps chat history on the device and, depending on the user's backup settings, in a chat backup. An on-device monitor reads message text as LINE displays it, along with attachments saved to the phone and the call log LINE maintains for voice and video calls.
Group chats produce the most data and the most context: sender names, membership changes and shared media all appear in the app. Timeline posts and sticker purchases are visible too, though they say less about safety than the chat list does.
One-to-one and group message text as displayed on the device
Voice and video call events with direction and duration
Photos, videos, voice messages and files saved to the phone
Contact and LINE ID changes visible in the app
Group membership changes and chat additions
Letter sealing and the encryption boundary
LINE applies letter-sealing encryption to one-to-one chats, which means the readable copy exists on the handset rather than on LINE's servers. Multi-device sync complicates this: a desktop or tablet session can hold history the phone no longer displays, and messages read there may never render on the phone.
Chat backups stored in iCloud or Google Drive are encrypted with a passphrase the user sets. A monitor does not decrypt them, and should not be described as doing so.
The regional context that matters
LINE is often the primary channel for school groups, family coordination and local services, so a dashboard will contain a large amount of ordinary household traffic. That is normal, and it is the reason filtering matters more here than on a messenger used mainly for friends.
Where LINE is the default messenger, the safety questions are usually about unknown contacts and late-night group activity rather than any single conversation. Keyword alerts on contact names and new group joins tend to be more useful than reading threads.
Lawful use
As with every messenger on this site: your own phone, a minor child in your care, or a company device issued with written notice. Monitoring a partner or another adult without consent is unlawful in most jurisdictions, and in several countries in LINE's core markets the penalties for covert monitoring are specific and enforced.
For a child, disclosure remains the practical recommendation. A monitored phone that the child knows about produces fewer secrets and more conversations than one they discover later.
Frequently asked questions
Can LINE messages be monitored despite letter sealing?
On the device, where LINE decrypts them for display. LINE's servers hold sealed content that is not readable, and encrypted chat backups are not decrypted.
Does it capture LINE calls?
Call events are recorded β contact, direction and duration. Call audio is not recorded, because LINE encrypts it end to end.
What about LINE on a desktop or tablet?
Multi-device sessions can hold history the phone no longer shows, and messages read there may never appear on the phone. The phone log is partial when other sessions are active.
Are LINE chat backups readable?
No. Backups are encrypted with a user-set passphrase, and a device-level monitor does not decrypt them.
