Remote lock is the one monitoring feature you will use when you are least able to think clearly. It does three things — locks the screen, puts a message on it, and cuts off access — and it does them only while the phone still has power, a signal and the app installed. This guide covers what lock actually enforces, the order to use it in when a phone goes missing, and the two failures that make it useless if you skip them.
What a remote lock actually does
A lock command forces the device to lock immediately and requires the existing passcode, or a new one you set from the dashboard. It does not erase anything, does not disable the SIM, and does not stop someone from powering the phone off. What it does is close the open session — the unlocked screen, the mail client, the photo gallery — that a person holding the phone would otherwise have.
The lock-screen message is the part people underestimate. A line reading "This phone is lost. Please call +44 … and I will pay a reward" turns a device you cannot recover into a device someone may hand back. It only works if the number on it is one you will actually answer, and if you have not already wiped the phone.

Optional alarm or sound, for a phone lost nearby
Sound capture and photo capture on supported builds, where lawful
Remote wipe — a separate command, and irreversible
Lock is not the same as wipe
Lock protects access and preserves the chance of recovery. Wipe protects the data and ends the chance of recovery, because a wiped phone no longer reports its location. Every theft guide that tells you to wipe first is giving you the data-protection answer, not the recovery answer.
The useful rule: lock immediately, then decide about wiping within a few hours. During those hours the platform finder and the dashboard can both still report a position. Once you wipe, you have the data safety and nothing else.
The two setup failures that make lock useless
First: no screen lock on the device. A remote lock command cannot add protection to a phone that has never had a passcode, because there is nothing to enforce — on most builds the command simply sets one, but if the device was unlocked and in a stranger’s hands when you sent it, the window has already passed.
Second: no battery optimisation exemption. Android aggressively suspends background apps that have not been exempted, and a monitoring service that has been suspended cannot receive the lock command. The phone looks fine, the dashboard shows a stale timestamp, and the command sits undelivered. Exempting the app from battery optimisation at install time is the difference between remote lock working and remote lock being decorative.
The order to use it in
Open the platform finder and note the position. Open the dashboard and check the last sync time — if it is recent, the phone is still online and a lock will land. Send the lock with a message, then call the number from a different phone.
If the position is moving, the phone is with someone. Lock it, do not wipe it, and call the carrier to suspend the line so the SIM cannot be used for calls or data. Then file a police report with the IMEI, which is what makes an insurance claim possible and what allows the carrier to block the handset on any network.
If the position is stale by more than a day and the phone was in a public place, the probability of recovery is low and the sensible move shifts to wiping and changing the passwords for every account that was signed in.
Using lock on a company device
For a business, remote lock is a security control and belongs in the written device policy: who can trigger it, what the lock message says, and what happens to the data if the device is not recovered within the stated period. It should be paired with the ability to revoke the work profile without touching personal data on a BYOD phone.
The operational mistake is a lock nobody can lift. Record who holds the dashboard credentials, and make sure at least two people can unlock a recovered device — otherwise a single departed employee can strand an entire fleet.
Frequently asked questions
Does remote lock work if the phone is offline?
Not immediately. The command is queued and runs when the device next connects. A phone that stays off or in airplane mode never receives it.
Will locking the phone delete anything?
No. Lock only enforces the screen lock and shows your message. Wipe is a separate, irreversible command.
Can the thief remove the lock?
A factory reset removes it, which is why the IMEI block and a police report matter. Lock buys time; it does not defeat a determined thief.
Why did my lock command never arrive?
Usually battery optimisation suspending the app, or the phone being powered off. Exempt the app from battery optimisation at install time.
