SMS is the oldest monitoring target and the one that changed the most quietly. RCS, dual SIM, and the migration of ordinary conversation into messaging apps mean a phone can show a nearly empty SMS inbox while being busier than ever. This guide covers what text capture reads, where RCS breaks it, and which signals still make SMS worth watching.

    Where text messages actually live

Android exposes a shared message store that the default SMS app writes to. A device-level monitor reads that store: sender, number, body, timestamp, SIM slot and read state, plus MMS metadata for picture and group messages. Because it is the system store rather than an app's private database, coverage is consistent across phones and does not depend on which texting app is installed.

The store holds what the phone received or sent. Messages deleted on the device disappear from it, so the dashboard is a snapshot record: what was captured before deletion remains, what was never synced does not.

    • Incoming and outgoing SMS with sender, number and timestamp
    • MMS metadata and media, where the carrier delivers them
    • Dual-SIM attribution, so each message maps to a slot
    • Read and delivery state where the platform exposes it
    • Contact resolution, so unknown numbers show as numbers

RCS is the complication nobody mentions

When Google Messages upgrades a conversation to RCS, the message may be stored in an app-private database instead of the system SMS store. End-to-end encryption in RCS further limits access, and the message can be delivered over data without the carrier ever seeing it. On those devices, the SMS view looks empty while the conversation is active.

This is not a defect that can be patched around. If RCS is on β€” and on most modern Android phones it is by default β€” the SMS feed should be read alongside app activity, and the absence of texts should never be taken as the absence of communication.

    What SMS still tells you

Despite the migration, SMS remains the channel for things people do not put in apps: bank alerts, delivery codes, two-factor authentication, appointment reminders, and contact from services that have no app. That makes it a strong corroborating feed β€” a burst of verification codes at 2am says something that no chat log will.

Unknown numbers are the other signal. A number that sends one message and is never saved, repeatedly, is worth checking; a number that appears in both SMS and the call log is worth checking twice.

    Lawful use

Text messages are private correspondence. Monitoring is lawful on your own device, a minor child's phone in your care, or a company device with written notice. Reading another adult's messages without consent is unlawful in most jurisdictions, and two-factor codes in particular make unauthorized access a route to account takeover rather than just a privacy breach.

    Frequently asked questions

    Does it capture RCS messages?

Only where they are written to the system message store. RCS conversations held in an app-private encrypted database may not appear in the SMS view β€” check the app activity feed alongside it.

    Are deleted texts recoverable?

Only messages captured before deletion. Once removed from the phone, they are not in the store to read.

Does it work with dual SIM?

Yes. Each message records which SIM received or sent it, so both lines are covered.

    Are MMS pictures included?

MMS metadata is always captured. The media itself depends on whether the carrier delivered it and the phone saved it locally.
