Instagram does not offer a restore for deleted DMs, and no third-party tool can bring them back. Deleted messages are removed from Meta's servers for both participants, so there is no "recycle bin" to reopen. Anything claiming otherwise is selling a recovery service it cannot deliver — several of those are outright scams that ask for your login.
What genuinely still contains traces, in order of usefulness:
- Download Your Information — Instagram app → Settings → Accounts Centre → Your information and permissions → Download your information. Request the JSON/HTML export and select Messages. Threads you deleted after the export window may still appear; threads deleted before it will not. This is the only first-party route and it sometimes surprises people.
- A second signed-in device — an old phone or tablet that was logged in and has not synced since the deletion may still hold the thread locally. Put it in airplane mode before opening Instagram, then screenshot whatever survives.
- Notification previews — lock-screen or notification history (Android's notification log, or iOS notification centre if you have not cleared it) can preserve the text of recent messages.
- Email copies — older Instagram message notifications, and any email thread where the conversation was forwarded or quoted.
- The other person — the most reliable source. Their copy is untouched by your deletion unless they deleted it too.
What does not work: "message recovery" apps, APK tools, or sites that want your password. There is no client-side cache deep enough to rebuild a thread after Meta removes it, and handing over credentials to a third party is how accounts get stolen.
Practical habit going forward: if a conversation matters, screenshot it or export your data before deleting. If the goal is oversight of a child's messaging rather than recovering your own, a monitoring app installed with consent can capture messages as they arrive — it cannot recover what is already gone, and any product claiming retroactive recovery is misrepresenting how the platforms work.
