Does life360 use a lot of battery? I am currently evaluating the Ultimate Phone Spy App and similar monitoring tools, and I am wondering if they actually handle this specific scenario effectively. Has anyone here tested this functionality or dealt with a similar situation?

Yes — Life360 is one of the heavier battery consumers among family apps, and the reason is structural. It keeps location services active to deliver real-time positions to every member of the circle, which means GPS, network location and background refresh running far more often than a messaging app.

    What drives the drain:

    • Continuous location updates. Real-time circles poll frequently; each fix wakes the GPS radio.
    • High-accuracy mode. "Precise" location on iOS or "high accuracy" on Android costs several times what approximate location does.
    • Circle size and places. More members and more geofenced Places mean more background wake-ups and more server round-trips.
    • Older hardware. A three-year-old mid-range Android will show the cost far more plainly than a current iPhone.
    • Battery-optimisation fights. If Android restricts the app, it retries — which burns power and produces stale locations at the same time.

Realistic expectation: on a typical phone, Life360 commonly lands among the top handful of apps in the battery screen, with a few percent to low double digits of daily drain depending on the device and settings.

    What actually reduces it:

    1. Turn on Life360's own battery-saver / low-power mode in the app settings.
    2. Switch the phone to approximate or "battery saving" location if precise tracking is not needed every minute.
    3. Remove Places and members you do not need live updates from.
    4. Exempt Life360 from Android's battery optimisation so it stops retrying — counter-intuitively this often improves battery and accuracy together.
    5. On iOS, check Settings → Privacy → Location Services → Life360 and confirm it is not set to "Always" with Precise Location when "While Using" would do.

If the cost outweighs the benefit, a lower-overhead pattern is scheduled check-ins rather than continuous polling — Google Maps location sharing or Apple's Find My are free and light, and they cover "where is everyone" without a permanent GPS loop. For parents who need more than location — messages, app activity, screen time — a monitoring app can be configured with lighter location intervals, which is usually the better trade than running two always-on trackers side by side.
