There is no single "best" iPhone tracking app, because iOS restricts what any app can read without a jailbreak. The right choice depends on which of three mechanisms you are willing to use: iCloud backup access, an on-device profile, or Apple's own Family Sharing.
Full disclosure: we build Ultimate Phone Spy, a parental-control app for exactly this β web history, app activity and screen time in one dashboard. Plans start at $16/month on the 12-month option, and the current plans are on our pricing page.
The three mechanisms, honestly compared
1. iCloud backup-based. You provide the Apple ID and password (and handle two-factor). The service reads the last device backup and reports messages, photos, contacts, Safari history, notes and installed apps. Strengths: no app on the child's phone, so nothing to detect or break. Weaknesses: it is only as fresh as the last backup, Wi-Fi backups must be on, and 2FA has to be completed β Apple prompts the child's devices, which is why transparency matters.
2. On-device profile (MDM-style). An app or profile is installed on the iPhone. You get live location, app usage, web filtering and screen-time limits, and it can be supervised so it cannot be removed without your approval. Weaknesses: it is visible in Settings, and it is the mechanism that makes the phone a managed device.
3. Apple's own tools. Family Sharing with Screen Time, Find My and Ask to Buy costs nothing and is genuinely good at location, limits and purchase approval. What it will never do is show message contents or browser history.
What to check before paying any vendor
- Does it need a jailbreak? If yes, walk away: jailbreaking voids warranty, breaks banking apps and exposes the child to more risk than it removes.
- Cancellation and renewal price. Intro offers of a few dollars usually renew at three to five times that.
- Data handling. Where is the data stored, is it encrypted, does the vendor sell it? A parental tool holds the most sensitive data in your household.
- Refund policy and whether support answers before you buy.
- Whether the vendor names the mechanism. "Works on any iPhone with no installation" means iCloud credentials, and they should say so.
Our own app sits in the first two categories depending on the plan. If all you need is location and limits, Apple's free tools are the better answer, and any honest vendor will tell you that.
