Stop supervision from the parent's Family Link app first - uninstalling Family Link from the child's phone while supervision is active does not work, because the account keeps re-applying the controls. The correct order is: release supervision, remove the Google account, then uninstall.
1. Stop supervision, parent's device. Open Family Link, tap the child's card, then Controls (gear) > Account settings > Stop supervision. Google asks for the parent's password, and for under-13 accounts in some regions it adds an approval step. The same flow exists at families.google.com.
2. If Stop supervision is missing, the profile is a supervised child account below your country's age threshold; the release path is Controls > Account settings > Delete account with the parent's password. It removes the profile and its data rather than handing it over.
3. On the child's device: Settings > Passwords & accounts > Google > Remove account (device PIN required). Then Settings > Apps > Family Link > Uninstall. If the button is greyed out, revoke it under Settings > Security > Device admin apps first.
4. A factory reset is the guaranteed clean slate, but setup will demand the last synced Google account (Factory Reset Protection), so remove the account before you wipe, not after.
5. School or work handsets are managed by Device Policy, not Family Link - only the administrator can release those.
If you are the child reading this: there is no legitimate bypass, the release genuinely needs the parent's password, and Stop supervision exists so that conversation can happen. We do not publish workarounds.
Once Family Link is off, the free replacement is largely its own reports - daily and weekly screen time, app limits, bedtime - plus Screen Time if the phone becomes an iPhone. Where you need message-level visibility rather than totals, we build Ultimate Phone Spy: Android 4.0+, Windows and Mac, parental control features. It does not cover iPhone. Use it on devices you administer and that the user knows about - covert installs and monitoring another adult are outside the lawful framing.
