Every app that shows you messages from another phone works one of two ways: the messages already sync to an account you control (iCloud, Google, a carrier family plan), or software is installed on that phone with access to its message database. Nothing reads a stranger's or partner's SMS with nothing installed, so anything claiming otherwise is a scam.
Free first-party routes
- iPhone, child's device: Family Sharing with a child Apple Account, plus Screen Time > Communication Limits. With Messages in iCloud on the family account you administer, threads appear on your own Apple device.
- Android, child's device: Google Family Link gives app activity and location; Google Messages for web mirrors texts into a paired browser, though pairing needs the phone unlocked.
- Carrier family plans: Verizon Smart Family, T-Mobile FamilyMode and AT&T Secure Family show call and text logs for lines on your account — metadata, not content, but legitimate and often already included.
Where we fit. Ultimate Phone Spy is the second category, used openly on a device the account holder administers: a minor's Android phone, or a Windows/Mac computer in the household. Install needs the passcode and about ten minutes of physical access — https://ultimatephonespy.com/installation-guide. The messaging side is documented at https://ultimatephonespy.com/sms-tracker: incoming and outgoing texts with timestamps, plus location, web history and installed apps. We do not cover iPhone, we do not do remote installs, and we cannot read iMessage. Pricing: https://ultimatephonespy.com/pricing.
What we will not help with. Reading an adult partner's messages without consent is interception under the Wiretap Act (18 U.S.C. 2511), state all-party-consent laws, the UK Computer Misuse Act and GDPR, and doing it with an app invites stalking charges. The admissible routes are consent, a shared family plan everyone knows about, or a court order — and for a custody dispute, a licensed investigator working for your lawyer.
Bottom line: start with the free tools built into the platform; they cover most of what parents need. Add a paid dashboard only for the gap — SMS content on an Android device you administer — and only with the phone in your hand.
