Google Maps location sharing is free, private and dead simple: it shares a live pin with chosen contacts for as long as you set, with no ads and no data resale. Life360 adds place alerts, driving reports and crash detection β and pays for them with an advertising model built on your location history.
Choose Google Maps sharing if you want to know where someone is, on any phone, without installing a family app on both sides. It works between Android and iPhone, survives restarts, and the only permission it needs is location on the sharing phone. Downside: no alerts when a child arrives at school, no history, no driving data, and it stops if the person taps "stop sharing".
Choose Life360 if you want automatic arrival and departure notifications, a driving report after each trip, crash detection, and a Circle that survives app reinstalls. Downside: aggressive battery use, a pushy upgrade funnel, and the data-selling model β opt out in privacy settings.
Accuracy is the same on both, because both read the phone's GPS and both degrade in the same ways: low battery, background restrictions, or a phone in a metal-lined bag. When one is wrong, the other usually is too.
Where our app fits. Ultimate Phone Spy is Android 4.0+, Windows and macOS and gives a timestamped location history inside a wider monitoring dashboard (location tracking). On iPhone, Google Maps sharing plus Find My covers what we would, at no cost.
